Cargo that does not fit in regular shipping containers or cargo bins is referred to as break bulk. Instead, break bulk material is shipped in bags, cartons, crates, drums, or barrels. Because each item needs to be loaded and unloaded separately using specialized equipment, transporting break bulk takes longer than shipping in standardized containers. Break bulk is distinct from bulk cargo, which is unpackaged, freely flowing liquid or dry goods.
