Understanding Express Bill of Lading

An express bill of lading is a non-negotiable document that simplifies the delivery process. It differs from the traditional original bill of lading (OBL) in several ways:

How does an Express Bill of Lading Work?

With an express B/L, the carrier is obligated to deliver goods directly to the designated consignee, without the creation of OBL. This document does not signify the transfer of ownership; ownership details are outlined in the sales agreement.

When is an Express Bill of Lading Used?

An express bill of lading is typically employed when:

  • The importer has pre-paid for the items before shipping.
  • The importer has established credit with the supplier.

Benefits of Using Express Bill of Lading

  • Saves time and postal courier fees.
  • No need for cargo to go through a "release" process.

Express Bill of Lading vs. Original Bill of Lading

It's essential to differentiate between the two:

  • Express B/L does not involve the creation of OBL.
  • OBL represents ownership transfer and is negotiable.
