What is the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code?

The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code is an essential factor in the import process as it can impact duty rates, additional duties, and government agency requirements.

How can I find the HTS code for my product?

If you are unsure of the HTS code for your product, you can follow these steps:

  1. Use the general rules of interpretation (GRI) to determine the HTS code that best fits your product.
  2. Use the USITC site or a tool like Beeontrade's HTS Code Lookup to search for the HTS code.

Keep in mind that correctly classifying your product can be challenging due to the many rules and exclusions. For example, if you are selling a kitchen knife, it might either be a knife or a ceramic product. If it is a knife, you will find it under Section 8211. But if it has a ceramic blade, you will find it classified under Chapter 69 (Ceramic Products).

What should I do if I can't determine the correct HTS code?

In cases of uncertainty, if you are unable to determine the correct HTS code, you can take the following actions:

  • Ask your customs broker for assistance.
  • Request a binding ruling from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

With the correct HTS code, you will be able to estimate the customs duties you will need to pay upon importing your product.
